School Lunch Complex

It’s been a long time since I've had lunch in the school cafeteria and I must say, man, have things changed. But before I get into that, I'm going to make a confession... I hated lunch time at school, from elementary to high school; and not because of the food either. I was always worried that my mom might have forgotten to pay my lunch money, and would be standing at the end of the line as someone announced, “Rachel Harris, didn’t pay for lunch.” My apprehension got worse, because even though I had friends, everyday I worried that I would have no one to sit by while I ate. (You think I have problems now, well it all started with a six year old with cafeteria anxiety). Let me tell you, now as a reasonably confident adult, I was still nervous to eat with first graders.

I remember my own elementary cafeteria, the smell that made the air feel thick, pieces of squish fruit on the floor, the light from the sky lights above that made me long to be out on the playground, and the excitement from kids of all ages trying to talk above the sound of clanking silverware and plastic trays. The food was something that was always questionable. Even at a very young age, I wondered if my mother would approve of the mystery ingredients that I was sure went into making all the dishes. It could just be Granite School District (in SLC where I grew up) but my friends and I used to use napkins to wipe off grease from the top of the most desirable lunch choice, pizza; and I swear that more than once there were little sticks in the lasagna and spaghetti. The lunch lady, who didn’t actually serve the food but rather she patrolled the cafeteria telling kids to “be quiet!” and “sit down!” She closely resembled the Trunchable, in looks and personality, from the movie Matilda. She scared all the kids who hated and secretly mocked her and dared each other to throw food at her. No one ever did of course, it seemed as though she knew the plan and came right to your table to inspect your tray (and you) just as you were feeling brave. School lunch must have been a scaring experience for me because, as soon as I was given the choice in jr. high, I never set foot in the cafeteria; my lunch came from the vending machines (a healthy choice, I know) which I ate outside even on cold snowy days.

It may not be like this at every school, but at Forbuss Elementary, I am eager to announce that things are so different from twenty years ago. Each grade had recess first then lined up in the lunch room. The kids who would eat “hot lunch” had something like credit card on a spiral key chain, which they wore like a bracelet. They formed a perfect line, like little soldiers (I was surprised because I remember my lunches being chaotic at best). The children sat with their class on their assigned table which only had a bench on one side, forcing all of them to face in the direction of the stage. The greatest shock came not long after I sat down, when “the lunch lady” through far better looking than the Trunchable, began to speak, into a microphone, telling the kids that someone was not facing the right direction. Hundreds of little gasps of shock filled the room. She wanted all the kids to on the count of three to point to where they should be looking. “1, 2, 3” and one hundred kids, like robots, pointed west with saying a word. “Oh, so you do know where to look.” My heart went out to the poor little six year old who apparently “didn’t know” he had to face forward.

Before I can tell you more about the lunch lady, let’s talk about the food. I think all the lunches for the whole school must have been prepared ahead of time. The disposable Styrofoam trays were stacked with tiny packages of food. Orange wedged in wrappers, hot dogs in wrappers, ketchup packets, dinner roll in wrapper, of course milk in the carton, and spork and napkin wrapped too; I am not kidding everything was individually wrapped.

So back to the lunch lady, once again on the microphone (I failed to mention previously that the kids are being quiet, everything is so orderly I don’t know why she thought need the microphone). She has a pathetic, sad sack, voice as she tells everyone how disappointed she is that someone couldn’t open their hot by themselves. I am thinking you have got to be kidding me, why didn’t they open it and put it on the trays before the kids took their lunch? She tells them all that, kindergarteners could do this, and to stop asking her for help, “I will only help you if a see stretch marks on the wrappers where you tried already.” Geez, is she for real? These kids are struggling to try and get their food. It’s like survival of the fittest. Kaylee leans over and tells me, “Hurry and help everyone’s at our table before she sees.” I have to admit there are times when I have had a hard time opening ketchup packets, I guess I should have asked a kindergartener, huh?

Before any of the kids were allowed to leave the tables, the lunch lady came over to make sure they eat enough lunch, that’s probably a good thing (its what I would be doing at home) but too bad for those kids who don’t like hot dogs, I wonder if they save it, and make them eat it for their next meal.

After this experience I’m not feeling so stupid for hating lunch growing up. I bet there’s someone else who will share my school lunch complex as well.

Star of the Week

Dear Mrs. McCartney's Class,

After being in a class together for over 100 days you have probably noticed that Kaylee is a nice, sensitive girl, who will always play with you at recess or sit by you at lunch if you are lonely. But, I think there are a few things that you may not know about her.

First of all, Kaylee is a dear devil. She is very brave and will try almost anything at least once. One time she and her brother were sliding down the stairs in a little couch side ways and having a great time, when some one thought it would be fun to go down front ways. Kaylee volunteered to go first, she was nervous but when all the kids yelled, “Go” she went; and with a bang, bump, crash, Kaylee rolled and tumbled all the way down. It was a shock to fall that much but after she saw that everyone was laughing, she laughed too. Kaylee loves to go four wheeling with her family. She has her own four wheeler and she goes super fast and isn’t afraid to keep up with her dad, when he goes over big hills and through the bushes.

The next thing you may not know about her is that she wears her heart on her sleeve. You can tell all of her feelings just by looking at her face. When she is mad, or impatient she doesn’t even need to say anything. And when she is sad or scared, you just want to give her a big hug to put a smile back on her face. She can’t kept any of her feelings a secret, and you know right away if she is tricking you or planning a surprise, because her face tells you that she’s trying to be tricky.

Kaylee has a great memory except for remembering names. If you tell her something she will always remember it even if you want her to forget it, she just can’t. She could watch a movie one time and remember exactly what the characters said. There’s just one problem with her memory and that’s for names. She forgets people’s names all the time, but don’t feel bad if she forgets yours, it doesn’t mean she doesn’t like you. In fact she even forgets her uncle’s names sometimes; I think she would forget her own if we weren’t calling it out all the time.

Since most of you eat breakfast before you come to school, you probably didn’t know that Kaylee loves breakfast. She would eat breakfast for every meal, even lunch and dinner if she could. It doesn’t matter if its cereal, oatmeal, pancakes, or waffles she loves it all. Sometimes, especially on track break Kaylee likes to sleep-in, and on those days she is really sad if she misses breakfast and she asks if she can have breakfast for lunch.

Kaylee is scared to death of almost all living creatures; from little bugs, like caterpillars and ladybugs, to dogs, and sometimes cats and even bunnies. One time when our family was talking a walk, a dog that we didn’t know came up to us to smell us and say hello. I knew Kaylee would be scared so I told her, “Don’t run, just stay clam, or the dog will get excited!” But do you think she could stay calm?… No way; she started running down the street, screaming for her life. But the dog thought she wanted to play so it chased her all around.

Kaylee can be very funny, but also responsible, and get things done when she needs to. She loves to be a helper, especially in the kitchen, writing down recipes and helping to bake. Since Kaylee is a big sister, she also thinks it’s her job to make sure her two little brothers help out too.

Kaylee is always asking questions and being a good listener she is her mom’s best friend. She loves to learn and help out. She helps to keep things peaceful and her family smiling. She makes her home a happy place to be. We love you very much Kayleebug.

Sincerly, Kaylee's Mom

In the Middle of the Night!

Wow another fun girl's all nighter. We had such a blast. It's hard to say exactly what makes it so fun, could it be the delicious snacks everyone brings? Or maybe the creative games that encourage everyone to get silly? It's probably getting to know all the great girls in our area. Plus it's fun to find out who you have things in common with and who you are nothing like, by playing silly games that make everyone giggle... alot! You don't have to stay up 'til all hours of the night to realize how great it is to have fun girl friends...but it sure is fun to!

In case you can't tell the little papers say 2:59 AM but by the time we took the picture it was well after 3AM and everyone got to say goodnight or good morning rather to Tom as he was heading off to work.

Soccer Time!

We are so excited for Warner to be playing soccer. Kate started up a little group of kids mostly from the ward who can practice together. She is so brave to do this since there are about twenty 4-5 yr old kids all running around. She is getting help from a couple of the other parents but still that's a lot of little ankle biters looking to kick a ball at you! Ever since Warner's first practice all he can think about is soccer everything. He had to get his own ball to practice at home with, and everytime he sees something with soccer, he thinks he has to have it. He told Tom the other day that he doesn't need any toys or games, not even four wheelers cause he's playing soccer now. I wonder if he knows he can choose both?

pre-Easter EGG Hunt

The kids got in some egg hunting practice before Easter this year. And all I can say is Kelly is a brave soul. At the request of her 6 and 4 yr old children, she hosted a pre-Easter egg Hunt. Complete with a craft, snack and egg hunt. The kids (all 16 of them) had a blast. Thanks Kelly, for including us in the festivities.

It's a good thing!

I'd been having a hectic day trying to complete a final for school, clean house and entertain kids (it doesn't help that Tom has an extra day of school this week and won't be home until 10pm). I think the kids could tell that I was frazzled, because on the drive home from Wal-mart they were silent; until Kaylee pointed out to me one good thing.... where did she learn this from...primary class?

"It's a good thing for Great Great Grandma and Grandpa that they're already dead. 'Cause when Jesus comes again, its gonna be pretty bad here.
......I hear there's gonna be lightening!"

Thoughts on GREEN

*Green is restful to the eye. Studies show that a green environment can reduce fatigue.

*Green is created out of a mixture of yellow and blue.

*The word green is closely related to the Old English verb growan, “to grow”.

*Green is a slang term for $$money$$.

*Green can represent nature, growth, hope, youth, sickness, health, go, Islam, environment, & envy.
* In the dark ages many people thought the Devil was Green.

*In advertising companies use green, to sell environmentally friendly products.

*In the book The Wonderful World Of Oz, everyone in the Emerald City wears tinted glasses to make everything look green.

*Chlorophyll is what makes planets green.

*Green animals include frogs, toads, lizards, turtles, amphibians, snakes, alligators, crocodiles, parrots, caterpillars, grass hoppers & prating mantises.

*Emerald is the name of a color, but an emerald can be many different shades of green.

*The Libyan Flag is completely green.

* There's no such thing as too much GREEN?!?

the Un-Talent Show

Saturday was a ton of fun for our ward at the Untalented show. Everyone did such a great job of performing and organizing a fantastic evening. There were magic acts, synchronized swimming, fiddling, and lip syncing, to name just a few of things. I participated in a Hip hop/ Cheer/ Scottish routine with the rest of the RS presidency; which included a pretty impressive stunt. Amie came down for the weekend and put together a cute little number; Andrew, Kaylee, Janet and Ben all did the UpSiDe DoWn Hokey Pokey. I was back stage laughing so hard I almost peed my pants.
But the big surprise (at least for me) was Tom's Solo!! That's right...Tom participated with the young Men's presidency in an American Idol spoof, and he Sang "Once there was a Snowman" for the entire ward! For anyone who knows Tom you can understand what a big deal this was for him, he was so nervous that day and could barley talk to anyone.

Who knows what's next for him now, ...maybe a talk in sacrament?!?!

On your mark, get set, GO!

You might be asking yourself "what in the world, would posses four very busy moms to train and plan on running a half Marathon?"
I'm asking myself that same question. But Kelly, Janet, Kate and I are committed! Jane is helping us train and hopefully in four months we will be ready for the race in Bryce Canyon. This was our first Saturday run and I can't believe I actually did all five miles ...
....with out needing an ambulance.

This first picture shows us, just waking up and feeling cold and tired...

...but after the run you can see we are on a natural high (it wouldn't be until the next day that the achy muscles take over and we are cursing the name Jane, for getting us into this mess).

Seriously, I am so excited to get into shape and do something extraordinary like this. Thank you Trainer Jane!

Airplanes

I wanted to take the kids as close as I could to the runway to watch the planes take off. Amie and Andrew came with to play with the kids. Some one told me about a place you could park and watch the planes takeoff and land, but we couldn't find it. So we ended up across the street at an office building, on a little patch of grass. We checked out a book from the library, about how airplanes work. It was fun and different.

Geez Mom! I'm soaked!

Kaylee got into the bath tub while I was doing some chores around the house. I told her not to get out of the bath until I came in to help her with her hair (washing her hair can be hard since it's so long). I guess laundry can be relaxing because, while folding socks on the my bed I took a little nap. When I woke up it had been 25 minutes since Kaylee got into the tub.

Kaylee- "Finally! I'm really bored."

Mom- "Did it seem like I forgot you?"

Kaylee- "Yes, where have you been, getting the mail or something?"

Mom- " Sorry, I fell asleep."

Kaylee- "Geez mom, now I'm really soaked! It's gonna take like 7 minutes for me to get dry!"

Kids Glow in the Dark

This morning, Warner really made my day a little brighter. He is so sweet and still figuring out the right words to use. He was so excited to tell me that he had figured something out.

Warner- "Mom I glow in the dark!"

Me- (thinking he was being silly) "Oh, you can, wow!

Warner- " I'm always glowing, glowing, all the night."

Me- " What are you talking about, you silly boy?"

Warner- "You know mom, its' like I'm getting bigger and bigger, I'm just glowing all night, when it's dark."

Library

This was only our second time going to the library, the first time was for a class on picking the right books. So we felt pretty brave to venture out with Xander, into a place that is supposed to be quiet. It was so hard for Xan to stay settled down and he was good, but all over the place. Poking his head in between books and climbing on the shelves.I thought for sure they were going to cut up our library cards and ask us to leave.

Kaylee is getting so much better at reading and her excitement seems to be contagious, because Warner wants to read now too. I am so proud of them. The key, I think was letting her pick her own books (which oddly enough always end up to be about a princess!)

When we were finally ready to check out.. of course we lost the kids library cards and Kaylee left one book the was due that day, at school we are on track break and can not get it for another four weeks). So we held up the whole line as we got new cards and had to renew Kaylee's missing book. The guy who was checking us out hands me the receipt and tells me when they're due, and I realize that Xander, who is sitting on the counter (finally being good) and waiting, but he is holding the little board book that he wants to take home. So I ask the guy if he got that one, and he looks at the line behind me and gives me a look like "you have got to be kidding me," and I give him a look like "you have got tot be kidding me." So I try to pry the book away from Xan, but he has got a death grip on it. I look back at the guy who's got a scanning gun and could easily reach over and scan the book while the screaming toddler holds it, making every one's life happy. But he just lifts his eyebrows slightly and waits. Xander is in hysterics now, on the floor hitting his head, and the security comes over to find out want crazy parents brought this beast in the library, but I didn't see a "no beasts allowed" sign posted out side, so I'm thinking, they can't really throw us out,.. can they? Well anyways, the kids are lucky that we have to go back to the library to return the books, otherwise they may never step foot in one again.
